All You Need to Know About Facial Exfoliation and the Chemical Peel Process

Beautiful skin is a peel away. Here’s what you need to know about exfoliation and chemical peels.

Why Exfoliate?

Exfoliation is an integral part of an effective skincare regimen. Why should you integrate regular exfoliation into your beauty routine?

When done correctly, exfoliation:

  • Helps unclog pores by removing dirt, oil, and dead cells from the skin’s surface
  • Helps skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin
  • Smooths the skin’s surface for a smooth and even makeup application
  • Evens out skin tone
  • Supports circulation and healthy blood flow
  • Boosts collagen production to fight aging and wrinkles
  • Increases cell turnover for a healthy glow

Exfoliation treatments are versatile, easy to use, and offer highly effective results. They also pair well with other anti-aging treatments like Botox®® and other injectables.

The Chemical Peel: One of Our Favorite Ways to Exfoliate

There are many options to exfoliate the skin from facial scrubs to dermaplaning, a specialized treatment that uses a sharp blade to exfoliate the skin manually. One of our favorite facial exfoliation treatments is the chemical peel.

Chemical peels are a time-tested and highly effective treatment option for improving the skin. They work by using an acidic solution to loosen skin cells and remove the skin’s outermost layers. When skin cells are removed, the body generates more to replace them. Chemical peels help thicken the skin by encouraging healthy cell growth.

Many different peeling options are available, allowing us to tailor your treatment to your particular skin type and concerns. A micro peel is ideal for sensitive skin and post-treatment touch-ups, while a TCA peel can penetrate to the deepest levels of the skin, providing dramatic change for aging and sun-damaged skin. We’ll work with you to figure out which is right for you.

What to Expect from a Chemical Peel at Desert Med Aesthetics?

Chemical peels can easily fit into your lifestyle. They are a simple, in-office procedure that generally requires no downtime and only take about an hour.

First, an acidic solution is applied to the skin. It gets to work quickly, gently detaching the bonds between skin cells and lifting dirt and oil from the skin. After a short time on your skin, the acidic solution is neutralized. We may then apply skin soothing and nourishing treatments after your peel to help your skin heal and regenerate quickly.

While the process is similar for most of our peels, the amount of time needed for recovery may vary depending on the depth of your peel. The skin may be temporarily red or shiny, but most patients return to their daily activities quickly. You’ll notice peeling as the treated layers of skin will fall off, and your skin will also be more sensitive to the sun.

Avoiding the sun and using lots of moisturizer are keys to quick healing. We’ll also teach you other ways to care for your skin adequately after a treatment.
