Dr. Dorina Cosgrove, Founder of Desert Med Aesthetics, aids the underserved populations throughout the world with the International Medical Alliance Organization and shares her unique experience.

San Salvador, El Salvador – July 31, 2014

Dr. Dorina Cosgrove, the owner and director of Desert Med Aesthetics, a medical spa in Indian Wells, CA, is donating 10 days of her time to serve the underprivileged people of El Salvador. Dr. Cosgrove generously donates her time working for the International Medical Alliance (IMAHelps) as the Assistant Surgery Team Director and the Mission Site Evaluator. Dr. Dorina has provided anesthesia for surgeons, helping with hundreds of operations while in San Salvador. The El Salvador mission is based in the capital of El Salvador, San Salvador which is also the most densely populated city in El Salvador. The mission starts on July 24 and will be serving patients till Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014.

Dr. Cosgrove has been a part of this cause for 6 years and every year, she finds so much humbling, joy to serve the patients. Dr. Dorina says, “a patient with cleft lip or club foot, that would have been immediately repaired in the USA, may go many years into adulthood with these disfiguring diseases.” She goes on to say that, open fire cooking is common in El Salvador and the patients they see often have terrible burns that lead to scarring in children that are never treated. IMAHelps is making a small, but extremely meaningful difference to serve the people.

Every year Dr. Dorina and her team pack several suitcases with high tech medical equipment and they always fill them with padding of stuffed teddy bears for the patients and their families. “The medical need of these people is just one aspect of their poverty. Each year I bring one of my children so that they can help in the hospital, but also meet the patients and their families. The first year my son Caleb came along and he saw a worried child and gave her a stuffed animal. The child was delighted to a degree you cannot imagine..”

“One of the greatest joys of my career is my participation in the International Medical Alliance (IMA Helps) Dr. Cosgrove says, “As we interact with the villagers of Nicaragua, my children and I are reminded of how good we have it, however, the direct interaction with destitute, real people is priceless.”

For Dr. Cosgrove, it’s been an honor to serve with International Medical Alliance, a small nonprofit group made up of all volunteers who pay their own way to provide medical care and operations in third world countries. There is lots of preparation work, but because its medical missions never exceed 10 days, IMAHelps attracts volunteers of all ages, both medical and non-medical.
