Tackling Botox® Myths
At Desert Med Aesthetics in Palm Desert, we provide a wide variety of skincare, anti-aging, and relaxation services to patients all over Palm Springs and beyond. As one of the premier providers of innovative and advanced skincare solutions, we also understand that people often come across common misconceptions about particular treatments, whether through word of mouth, social media, or the internet. Botox® is amongst the most commonly stereotyped treatments.
But are any of these myths factual or just fabricated? Continue reading as we tackle a few of the most common myths surrounding Botox® injections.
1. It Freezes Your Face
The biggest Botox® myth, thanks to comedy skits, movie scenes, and terribly over-processed celebrities, is that Botox® injections will freeze your face and make it so that you’re incapable of making expressions or facial movements of any kind. In reality, the “frozen” look that people talk about is due to overdosing. While Botox® does reduce muscle movement, it doesn’t eliminate or fundamentally change how your face is able to move.
When done by a trained professional, you won’t have to worry about the “frozen” effect because they’ll administer just the appropriate dosage of Botox® to eliminate wrinkles and fine lines but still leave you with regular muscle movement.
2. It’s Toxic
Another common myth about Botox® is that it’s toxic. While the substance is a neurotoxin, it is not dangerous in the quantities used during cosmetic treatment. Botox® is composed of a neurotoxin called clostridium botulinum, which is found in our natural environment and inactive in everyday quantities. In the correct doses and at the hands of a professional injector, the only things Botox® is toxic to are wrinkles, fine lines, and maybe the occasional migraine.
3. Treatments Are Painful
This myth has more to do with patient tolerance for needles more than the treatment itself. The reason that this treatment is so popular is because of its efficiency and general painlessness nature. Many people who have had this treatment consider it something they can do on their lunch break.
The treatments are painless because the needles used are incredibly fine and cause far less pain and discomfort than a typical shot. If you’re uncomfortable around needles or cannot tolerate the pain like others, a numbing cream can be applied before your injections so that you won’t feel a thing.
