Achieving your ideal appearance doesn’t always require invasive cosmetic surgery. At Desert Med Aesthetics, our Indian Wells team specializes in helping patients discover their best look without invasive treatment. For those who want to improve skin texture, smooth away wrinkles, and revive dormant hair follicles, cosmetic specialist Dr. Doriana Cosgrove recommends fat transfer treatment. This versatile procedure can effectively address a number of cosmetic concerns.
What is Micronized Fat Transfer?
Conceptually, micronized (“micro”) fat transfer is a form of skin rejuvenation. However, unlike laser skin therapies or dermal fillers, this treatment takes a more holistic approach to cosmetic care. This technique uses your body’s own fat tissues and regenerative cells to improve collagen production, add volume to the face, and provide optimal conditions for hair growth.
The term “fat transfer” is slightly misleading. Rather than targeting just excess fat, this technique uses regenerative cells that exist within fat tissue. During each treatment session, this combination of cellular material is transferred from the abdomen, love handles or buttocks to areas that have lost volume or have been damaged. By using this combination of regenerative cells and fat tissue, this procedure effectively helps stimulate collagen production and provides much needed support for sagging skin.
While traditional hyaluronic fillers are effective in adding volume to deficient areas, some patients may find that these injectables do not sufficiently stimulate collagen regeneration. In addition to eliminating the need for surgery, micro fat transfer uses your own tissues to restore volume and tone to the skin, making it very natural.
The use of your body’s regenerative cells and fat tissue also offers the added benefit of promoting new blood supply and collagen growth. These are key benefits, particularly for patients looking to address textural or tone problems. Likewise, the regenerative cells provide optimal conditions for hair growth and can revive dormant follicles, restoring beautiful, healthy hair. Compared to traditional cosmetic procedures for addressing these issues, the micro fat transfer technique is minimally invasive and requires little to no downtime.
While older methods of fat transfer required several visits spaced a few weeks apart, the stem cells included in micro fat transfer help “trick” the body into accepting the transferred fat. This improves results and decreases the amount of fat that is reabsorbed by the body.
Who Is a Candidate for Micro Fat Transfer Rejuvenation?
Weight loss, sun damage and the aging process can all transform the appearance of your face. As collagen production slows and volume decreases, skin also loses its structural support. This creates the appearance of sagging or premature aging, factors that can keep patients from feeling completely confident in the way they look.
At Desert Med Aesthetics, Dr. Cosgrove has successfully used this stem cell fat transfer technique to address a myriad of issues. Patients seeking this procedure often exhibit the following:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Marionette lines and nasolabial folds
- Uneven skin texture, tone or scarring
- Sunken or thinning cheeks
- Sun damage
- Thinning lips
- Thinning hair
During your consultation with our Indian Wells cosmetic specialist, we’ll use advanced VISIA imagery to identify which areas could be best addressed with this procedure. Dr. Cosgrove will then create a custom treatment strategy that comprehensively addresses your concerns and improves your appearance.

What Can I Expect During My Visit?
Because this procedure uses your cells for treatment, the process is a little different from other rejuvenating procedures, as the regenerative tissue must be collected to inject it. At the start of your fat transfer session, Dr. Cosgrove will harvest a small amount of tissue from the abdomen or buttocks using a blunt-tip cannula. This needle-sized instrument is gentle and creates less swelling and bruising than a traditional hypodermic needle. For your comfort, our cosmetic specialist will apply a local anesthetic. As you relax, the tissue is refined of unwanted particles and the remaining fat is micronized, or liquified. This process makes it possible to inject your tissue into the treatment areas.
When it’s time to place the tissue, Dr. Cosgrove will numb the treatment areas with a local anesthetic. The material is then injected much like any other dermal filler. After the fat transfer is complete, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) will be injected in similar locations to promote better healing. The technique usually takes between 45 minutes to an hour, from start to finish.
What Is the Recovery and How Long Do The Results Last?
Given the minimally-invasive nature of this treatment, there is minimal downtime associated with micro fat transfer. Most of our patients take the rest of the day to recover and return to work and their usual routine the next day.
Like other injection-based rejuvenation treatments, patients who choose this technique enjoy nearly immediate results. As PRP is injected, individuals also benefit from gradual collagen production and progressive rejuvenation in the treatment areas. The results of this treatment can last anywhere from several months to two years.

Micro Fat Transfer in Palm Desert FAQs
Yes, micro fat transfer uses a specialized micritization process that liquefies the fat into much smaller particles compared to traditional fat grafting. This allows for more precise injection using finer needles and enables treatment of delicate areas like under the eyes and around the mouth that cannot be addressed with conventional fat transfer techniques. The micronized fat particles also contain a higher concentration of regenerative cells, which promotes better tissue rejuvenation.
Since micro fat transfer is performed under local anesthesia only, you can typically eat a light meal before your appointment. However, you should avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications for at least a week prior to treatment, as these can increase bruising and bleeding during the procedure. Your specific pre-treatment instructions will be discussed during your consultation.
Because the procedure uses only local anesthetic rather than general anesthesia or sedation, most patients can drive themselves home after their micro fat transfer treatment. However, some patients prefer to arrange transportation for added comfort, especially if treating multiple areas or combining with other procedures.
Only a very small amount of adipose tissue is required for facial micro fat transfer treatments, typically just a few milliliters. The extraction site, whether from the abdomen, flanks, or buttocks, will have virtually no visible change in contour since such minimal fat is removed. This makes the procedure suitable even for patients with lower body fat percentages.
Micro fat transfer can be strategically combined with other procedures to enhance overall results. Many patients pair it with laser treatments for skin texture improvement or with neurotoxins for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Your provider will recommend the optimal treatment combination based on your specific aesthetic goals during your consultation.
You should discontinue blood-thinning medications and supplements at least one week before your procedure, including aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil, and certain herbal supplements. These substances can increase bruising and bleeding during both the harvesting and injection phases. Always consult with your provider before stopping any prescribed medications.
Adipose tissue contains a remarkably high concentration of regenerative cells, more stem-cell-like cells per volume than bone marrow. These cells stimulate collagen production, promote tissue repair, and help create new blood vessels in the treatment areas. This regenerative capacity is what distinguishes micro fat transfer from synthetic fillers, providing both immediate volume and long-term improvement.
While you’ll notice immediate volume enhancement, some initial swelling may make the treated areas appear slightly overcorrected for the first few days. As swelling subsides over the following week, your results will settle into a natural appearance. The regenerative benefits continue developing over subsequent months as collagen production increases and tissue remodeling occurs.
Maintaining a stable weight is important for optimal outcomes. Significant weight fluctuations after treatment can affect the transferred fat cells, potentially diminishing results. Patients who have maintained consistent weight for at least six months prior to treatment typically achieve the most predictable and lasting outcomes.
There is no specific age restriction for micro fat transfer procedures. The ideal candidate is determined more by skin quality, overall health, and having adequate fat stores for harvesting rather than chronological age. Both younger patients seeking preventive rejuvenation and mature patients addressing advanced volume loss can benefit from this treatment approach.
The micronized nature of micro fat transfer makes it particularly well-suited for delicate areas like the tear troughs under the eyes. The liquefied fat can be injected with precision using very fine needles, addressing hollow areas that contribute to tired-looking eyes. The regenerative cells also improve skin quality in this thin-skinned area, potentially reducing the appearance of darkness.
Most patients can resume wearing makeup within 24 hours of their procedure once any injection sites have healed. However, you should avoid applying heavy pressure when applying cosmetics for the first few days to allow the transferred fat to settle properly. Mineral-based makeup is often recommended initially as it is less likely to cause irritation.
