Hyperbaric Therapy

Hyperbaric Therapy in Palm Desert, CA

At Desert Med Aesthetics, Dr. Doriana Cosgrove is now helping patients improve blood flow and increase healing with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. This simple outpatient procedure involves relaxing in a pressurized chamber where you will breathe 100% oxygen while the atmospheric pressure increases around you. Breathing oxygen in a controlled and pressurized environment has been proven to stimulate the body’s mechanisms to promote the healing of stubborn wounds, infections, or sudden hearing or vision loss conditions.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBOT) Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing 100 percent pure oxygen while lying inside a pressurized, pure acrylic chamber. The air pressure inside the chamber is roughly two and a half times more than the pressure normally in the atmosphere. The higher-pressure dose of oxygen will allow your blood to transport more oxygen to your organs and tissues, help promote wound healing organ function, and activate white blood cells to help fight off infections.

In clinical studies, HBOT has proven to enhance the body’s innate ability to repair and regenerate. It is also used as an adjunct therapy to help enhance the body’s healing process in chronic and acute conditions.

The patient will typically receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy five days a week for four to six weeks. One treatment takes around two hours. Most patients find the experiences to be calming and comfortable.

What Conditions Can Oxygen Therapy Treat?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be used as part of a treatment plan for certain conditions, including:

  • Slow or non-healing wounds
  • Diabetic foot or leg ulcers
  • Non-healing skin grafts
  • Non-healing surgical wounds
  • Chronic bone infections
  • Crush injuries
  • Sudden hearing or vision loss
  • Thermal burns
  • Conditions that have occurred due to radiation

What To Expect from A Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Treatment?

HBOT treatments are typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you are free to go home or return to your normal activities immediately after your appointment. The increased air pressure will create a temporary feeling of pressure in your ears, similar to how you might feel while diving in a swimming pool, flying in an airplane, or at the top of a mountain. A member of our team can show you how to relieve this fullness so that you can avoid any discomfort through your treatment.

Before entering the chamber, you’ll be given a cotton gown to wear. It’s critical that you don’t enter the chamber wearing any grooming products (hairspray, hair gel, or wax), piercings, electronics, dentures, or prosthetics (wigs). Once the treatment starts, you’ll hear a hissing sound as the chamber pressurizes. In addition, you may notice a slight increase in temperature during this compression phase. The compression stage of the treatment can last anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes, depending on your comfort and how effective you are at relieving the pressure in your ears.

Once you are at the prescribed pressure in the chamber, the pressure in your ears should disappear, and you’ll feel completely normal. You can watch television, listen to music, sleep, or read for the remainder of your treatment.

At the end of your treatment, the pressure will gradually decrease. During this decompression, you’ll likely experience a popping or crackling sensation in your ears due to the reduced pressure. If the crackling continues post-procedure, report to a team member.

What To Expect After Your Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Treatment?

After your session, a team member will examine your ears and take your blood pressure. If you have diabetes, we will also check your blood glucose to ensure everything is normal. Once you’ve been cleared to leave, you can get dressed and return to your normal schedule.

You may feel tired or hungry following your treatment; otherwise, there should be no adverse reactions.
